What is The Hague Apostille?

The Hague Apostille is a type of authentication or legalization of a public document that is required for it to be recognized in a foreign country that is a signatory to the Hague Convention of 1961. The Hague Convention is an international agreement that simplifies the process of legalizing documents between countries by eliminating the need for further authentication or legalization by a consulate or embassy of the destination country.

The Hague Apostille is a special certification that is attached to the original public document, such as a birth certificate, marriage certificate, diploma, or power of attorney, by a competent authority designated by the country where the document was issued.

The Apostille verifies the authenticity of the signature, the capacity in which the person signing the document acted, and the identity of any seal or stamp affixed to the document.

In summary, the Hague Apostille is a form of authentication that allows public documents to be recognized and accepted as valid in foreign countries without further certification or legalization.

In the UK, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) is responsible for issuing Apostilles. The process of obtaining an Apostille in the UK typically involves the following steps:

  1. Obtain the original document: The first step is to obtain the original document that needs to be Apostilled. This could be a birth certificate, marriage certificate, diploma, or any other public document.
  2. Check eligibility: Not all documents are eligible for an Apostille. The FCO website provides a list of documents that can and cannot be Apostilled.
  3. Get the document certified: Before an Apostille can be issued, the document must be certified by a relevant authority, such as a solicitor, notary public or government office. The certification will verify that the document is genuine and the signature on the document is authentic.
  4. Submit the document to the FCO: Once the document has been certified, it can be submitted to the FCO for Apostille processing. The FCO offers both standard and premium service options, with the standard service taking up to 5 working days and the premium service taking up to 1 working day.
  5. Receive the Apostilled document: Once the FCO has issued the Apostille, it will be attached to the original document and returned to the applicant via post.

It's important to note that the process may vary depending on the type of document and individual circumstances. It's recommended to consult with a professional service or the FCO directly for more detailed information and guidance on the Apostille process in the UK.
